Course Description

Program Description CBU has the highest percentage of Aboriginal student enrollment and graduate success rates of any post-secondary institution in Atlantic Canada. We are fortunate to enjoy a long history of strong partnerships with Mi’kmaq communities across the region, working together to expand the knowledge of our region’s Indigenous cultures by offering programs like Mi’kmaq Studies, that put the spotlight on their history and traditions. Mi’kmaq Studies is offered as a Major and Concentration through CBU’s Unama’ki College, supported by the Department of Indigenous Studies. This program is designed to familiarize Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal students with Mi’kmaq history, language, culture, traditions and socio-economic development of the Mi’kmaq First Nation. Mi’kmaq Studies is viewed from the unique lens of Cape Breton supported by a Canadian and Global perspective. The program delves into Mi’kmaq culture looking specifically at governance, spirituality and contemporary social issues. Dig into a culture that has the deepest roots on the Island. Leveraging CBU’s surroundings and roots is a big part of this program. Students can work closely with CBU’s own Unama’ki College and with members of Mi’kmaq communities across Cape Breton, and participate in exciting research opportunities. Small class sizes, knowledgeable Mi’kmaw faculty and staff, our Department of Indigenous Studies, offers courses designed with Aboriginal students in mind. Prepare for a career in government, public and band administration. legal and education sectors, or graduate studies geared towards teaching Mi’kmaq language, culture, history and traditions at the university level. Talk to an Academic Advisor about pairing a major in Mi’kmaq Studies with a post graduate program for the career you want. CBU is the leader among Maritime institutions in the delivery of Mi’kmaq language courses. CBU’s signature course, English-Mi’kmaq Comparative, provides students with the skills needed to operate in a university atmosphere. Other courses are designed to give students a foundation to succeed in the workforce at every level.
